yes, I'd be largely concerned with the interface, so a new controller could be configured, or a new configuration put in place quickly to try out ideas.

PD (specifically PD-extended) can do all of this if you're willing to put the effort in. I'm not aware of a fully contained GUI based app under linux for only this purpose - I assume you want something like OSCulator on the mac?
