It was running at less than half speed :( I had thought that the usage percentages were going up rather fast, but put it down to imagination - I should learn to trust my instincts more! I didn't want to get into messing about with scripts and possibly screwing something else up so, as the machine is ONLY used for music production, I disabled scaling in the BIOS. After about an hour's running gkrelm is still reporting cpu temperature as only 40degC. Thanks everyone else for you suggestions, but for now I'll stick with the system I know best (I think). P.S. The MidiSport problem was due to the driver now being in /usr/local/share instead of /usr/share where my script was looking for it!
