Check Preferences -> Backend to see if the 'launch backend if not started' checkbox is selected. It should be.
If like Julian said that ps ax | grep linuxsampler does return true, you need to create the audio and midi devices, in the device tab.

If not, perhaps the plugin just didn't start LS itself. Sorry, that's only
