as soon as I
launch Jack, I lose all sound from the YouTube video I'm trying to
watch in Firefox. How does one get around that?

My personal solution for this problem is DUAL BOOT.
I use Ubuntu for youtube, emails, accounting and similar
I have also installed AVLinux as my "Music Production Enviroment".
This way, music (and all its files and folders) is separated from the other staff and the whole environment looks much more cleaner ad inspiring for work.
These days, all distros are capable of recognising each other so setting up a dual boot on Linux is really easy.
