My situation is complicated further by the fact that, although it is the same kernel version and distribution, the systems are 32-bit vs 64-bit. And in my case, 64-bit produces hiss and 32-bit doesn't in the linux environment and there are no problems in the windows environment (have 32 and 64 bit test machines). And also, in case I wasn't clear before. The 64-bit windows instance is the same hardware (dual-boot) as the 64-bit linux. For me, that clearly points to my linux OS and/or 64-bit drivers.
