it was this one single point that was causing all of the confusion.
the midi status byte is defined in the midi spec, i.e. 176 	Chan 1
Control/Mode Change.  once those numbers became clear from the midi
spec, the entire thing made sense, and I can now successfully get
everything going as planned.

big thanks to you and lsd in the #opensourcemusicians chat room for
helping me through this.

only one item remains:  is midi control of the play button
implemented?  I don't see it mentioned in the doc...
