I think the current Ubuntu, the 9.10, is indeed performing well, I installed for a friend recently. But Ubuntu had some problems since 8.04, in 8.10 midi was not working well and 9.04 gave graphics problems with Intel chips. The only distribution that ever wowed me was 64Studio with incredible performance out of the box.
