The same happened to me. In my case it was the custom kernel that I was
using, if I recall correctly CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2 must be disabled
in Karmic, and also old kernels will have problems because they will miss
some files under /proc.

If you are already running the official kernel, then it must be another
different issue...
