I don't think zynaddsubfx can be fixed without almost completely 
rewriting it... 
Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate cal's work on yoshimi, which 
made it a lot more usable, but ultimately I think the current GUI is a 
dead end.

What I'd like to see is a synth with all the sounds and features of 
zynaddsubfx, but with a GUI that doesn't look like it's still 1990, and 
a less monolithic architecture. Having all of zynaddsubfx's synth 
engines and effects available as LV2 plugins would be the perfect basis 
for that.
