I have emerged (I'm running gentoo) zynaddsubfx, qsynth, fluidsynth
and hexter, but there is nothing listed in rosegarden under studio ->
manage synth plugins. How do I get synth plugins to show up in
rosegarden?

Thanks.

Afaik Rosegarden can only host DSSI synth plugins. I think Hexter is an
DSSI, zynaddsubfx certainly isn't, don't know about the others.

Rosegarden sees ZynAddSubFX and qsynth/fluidsynth as MIDI devices, not
plugins.

Indeed that's right. There is a fluydsynth-dssi which can operate as a synth device in rosegarden.
Additionally you would be using rosegarden simply as a midi "generator" plugging its midi output into the various synths. This has its pros and cons of course.

Kind regards,
Lorenzo
