As far as I understood it (from http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin) it should
be working out of the box. From what you wrote now it doesn't seem to be. :(

So you need to set it up manually. You can find a howto on the aforementioned
page, i.e. http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin
