There's no substitute for taking the time to take every mic you have access to and recording your amp in every conceivable way - right up to the grille, a foot away, a meter away, straight on, to the left, to the right. Record it all, take notes, then go lsten to what you recorded, and figure out what *you* like best. I don't have a bias against 57s - they have their place.
