I notice you have two 'root' lines in above entry. 
I'm guessing you might try removing the first one.

Otherwise, I would suggest going back to the old-style boot
logic, at least for verification purposes.

/boot/grub/menu.lst:

	root (hd0,0)

/etc/fstab:

	/dev/sda1 /  ext3    relatime,errors=remount-ro 0       1

Booting was never trivial.  There is also now a grub/grub2
distinction to learn...
