I've been using 8.10 without the rt kernel and am fairly happy with it 
as a general purpose system. However, for my music purposes I need an rt 
kernel, hence the original post.

I assume you refer to Intrepid ? Hardy seems well-regarded and (IIRC) is 
now the basis for the upcoming release of 64 Studio 3.0.
