The 9-ping connector is for S/PDIF and MIDI connections. The link you gave shows the connector that goes to that port. The 2496 only has the 2 mono I/O channels. If you want more, you can either connect a mixer and mix down to 2 channels, or step up to a Delta 44 which has 4 I/O channels. All the M-Audio Delta cards are well-supported under Linux.
