I looked a bit harder at mpd.conf and found this line:

#mixer_type              "software"

After removing the # (thus enabling software mixing) I can adjust the 
volume from the clients. Seems the mpd devs have thought about most 
everything :-)

Thanks for the replies, seems like this was not the time for me to get 
familiar with the inner workings of alsa et al, helas :-)
