The trick to cinelerra is treating a crash as a minor inconvenience (which it is, the program is quite scrupulous about saving it's state, so you never lose more then 1 mouse click worth of interaction, as long as you remember to load the backup). Many places where a normal program would give an error message, cinelerra simply segfaults - in particular loading a file with a codec cinelerra cannot understand (this is an issue especially because cinelerra can save to formats it cannot load). Despite this issue (apparently a symptom of a lack of developer time), cinelerra is a great program and well worth getting to know.
