Something must have changed/improved since then. 

Pretty good results here running 2.6.26.7 + 2.6.26.6-rt11 (except that
USB midi seems to be broken... arghh...)

So far the most "stable" realtime kernel for me has been is
2.6.24.7-rt21 (if we are talking about recent kernels, of course).
