Another alternative would be to look at all the jack*mix* apps which come in 
all sizes and flavors (fixed channels, variable channels, matrix, qt-based, 
gtk-based, opengl-based, you name it...). Needless to say that I would use 
jackmix for the job if you don't need plugins on the tracks.
