Well, if you tell your device to sync to spdif (which means "sync to 
spdif-in") and don't give it a spdif-clock. Than its surprising the timebase 
is even half way stable. When I use that trick on my firepod I get very 
unsteady sound frequency-wise...
Yes, that is natural behavior.
