My kernel version is 2.6.18.8-86 so it's not this HELL thing. I'm glad.
I'll check for the IRQ and PCI then.

Thanks for the heads up.. This is clearly not an issue then..

The other thing I forgot to note was the pci latency settings. On
my system I have been using a script I got from this mailing
list (was it yours Paul?):

#!/bin/sh

case $1 in
    start)
          # "open up" the PCI bus by allowing fairly long bursts for
all devices, increasing performance
          setpci -v -s "*:*.*" latency_timer=b0

          # maximise latency for SBLive!, thus allowing
          # more data per PCI transfer and minimizing xfuns
          setpci -v -s 01:0a.0 latency_timer=ff
esac

exit 0

obviously requiring altering 01:0a.0 to match the results of lspci -v for the
soundcard in your system.
