By default, my setup is exactly what you describe, 1, 3, 5, 7 are hard
left, 2, 4, 6, 8 are hard right. Muting channel 1, I get a mono sound
through both speakers that sounds 'in the middle' (which is not
correct). Muting channel 2, I only get audio out of the left channel
(which is correct).
