Usually, if there is no debian package, just download the package, have
a look at
README and INSTALL files and make sure you somehow manage to set the prefix
to /usr/local (for example ./configure --prefix=/usr/local) , this way
your installation
will not interfere with your package management system.
(If you are not root, /usr/local will not be writeable; use your home
directory or
a subdirectory of it)
