I've used ABC(+) a lot, it's easy to learn, compact, and you get MIDI
files and nice looking sheets. You can even set complex pieces. On the
other hand, each of the conversion tools seem to interpret abc a little
bit differently, so if you want MIDI and sheets of complex pieces,
you might run into spending several hours trying to find a variant that
works with both (there is a cpp-like pre-processor available, but :-( ).
IIRC it has originally been developed for folk tunes, so if you want
to set melodic music with guitar chords (and optionally tin-whistle
tabulature) it's worth a try.
