Sure, you could load them there or in Specimen.

Yes. If you want to use them in an app that doesn't accept AIF files 
(aka AIFF and sometimes AIFC) you can use a utility like SoX to convert 
them to WAV.

IIRC, any app that employs libsndfile ought to be able to use AIFF files 
directly.
