I wanted to thank everyone who helped on this thread. We have cobbled together a solution that allows us to play GNU Denemo in the GNU Linux lab over edubuntu. Essentially, we require the students to start play sequentially, rather than simultaneously. It takes a wee bit longer, but it works.
That obviously is just a workaround, and not a solution, so we will keep looking for a solution. Thanks again!
