That's not the case.  If the documentation says it does, then it's probably 
just old documentation comparing hotplug to whatever the situation was before 
hotplug was invented.

It does require that the device firmware be installed on your system, but once 
it is, a udev-based system (with not-too-ancient ALSA drivers) should handle 
it fine.  I use such a setup myself.
