As of now, I only know Frank Barknechts pdsyncgrain dodo such a trick
the way you describe it, Csound and even SND should be capable also but
pdsyncgrain is exactly what you whant.

But alas! It only worked for me back in Suse 9.3, since then I never
coul make it play again - not in Ubuntu that is....
