I haven't had time to suss it out on my own yet but my son's machine
has an Intel-HDA on-board chip and I get lots of xruns. Hopefully in
the next week I'll get a chance to look at it more closely.

Additionally to the other comments? Do you have capturing enabled in
alsamixer? If not i heard the HDA driver behaves a bit odd ;)
