Thanks for the tip, but it appears to make no difference.  The control
is still called "Synth" on this card, it's relatively old (not exactly
sure how much).  I must say the alsamixer is acting strangely with
this card - some controls can't be changed, some (including synth)
won't be muted.  The synth does let itself be adjusted.  The total volume
doesn't respond to "pcm" or "main", I need to use "Wave Surround" instead.

I've connected the midi keyboard to each of the soundblaster ports,
but no sound sofar.
