in my case, 64studio/debian etch, mplayer uses jack. it comes from the debian repositories here:  
http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/pool/main/m/mplayer/
don't know how they work with ubuntu, good luck 
- having mplayer run on jack was quite on top of my wishlist as well before it worked.
