Any ideas from you kind folks, many of whom probably dump sysexes from your hardware synths and/or MIDI controllers on a regular basis?

Hmm.  Does "arecordmidi" capture anything?  How about amidi <port> -d
-a?  Or using hw:1,0 as the port?

Do you have high res timers and/or nohz enabled in your kernel?  Can
you test a non-rt kernel?
