I see such things as a kind of instruments such as hardware-keyboards or sequencers - gear to create sounds, that can be used to be imported to/recorded with ardour to be tracks the same as guitartracks or drumtracks are. And in fact: most music, people listen to on this planet, could be recorded without any sequencersoftware at all by using the basic means of a dedicated hd-recorder.
