yes, I'm afraid nobody seems to have the very first messages (from 1998) archived. A similar discussion from 1999-2000, together with some list history, is available at:

come from someone else ...

Yes, some people provided me with earlier messages from 1998-99 and I merged them to my archive (which was first at eca.cx/lad[adu] and now at lalists.stanford.edu). If someone can find even earlier messages, I'm happy to merge them to the online archive!
