I would just like more reverb, as for me this asks for a larger room and more distance to the singer.

I could easily imagine everything washed in reverb, but I'm trying to avoid that. I must admit though that part of the reason the percussion sounds are so dry is that I can't figure out a clever way to add effects to specimen. Actually the only way I can think of would be to record the sounds on individual tracks in ardour and add effect there. But that would loose the dynamic nature of the setup and would be so cumbersome that I might only do it as a very last thing (which IMHO is much too late).

So in an unavoidable technical/geeky fashion let me ask: Any suggetions for dynamically adding effects to individual samples in specimen or any other sampler that handles this better?

But that's nitpicking, this might become my favourite piece of everything from here I came across :)
