As Paul pointed out, Intel HDA stuff is a mess.  It's not the fault of
Linux but of the hardware which was designed to be as cheap as possible.
My advice to you is to get a good soundcard.

I don't think I can afford Linux then.  I forgot to mention it's a
laptop.  My mistake buying it...
