Nothing beats Snd. Not even on Windows. Also runs inside Pd. ;) 

Besides that there is Audacity, which I'm not particulary fond of
however, and there is Rezound, which is wonderful for cutting loops
because it has very good intuitive play-selection-as-loop functions.

Can Sweep open big soundfiles now?
