You could try a player that's still maintained... I don't think XMMS has
been updated in some time.  Aqualung does not seem to be mature enough
for general use.  Maybe BMP2?

BMP2 was really dodgy last time i tried it. Heard good things about
aqualung but haven't given it a go recently.

Yeah, the media player situation on Linux is kind of bad.  I wish the
community could pick one to standardize on and focus on improving it.

i think on this list there should be a kind of consensus that jackd is recomanded?
