Bristol does not support jack yet (soon, hopefully). Jack busies up the alsa device through which you might be play. MIDI can be "connected" through jack without jackd running. Action depends upon the program. Also, in many cases, when the program works with jack, you need to got to the jack "connections" and explicitely connevt the output of your program to the alsa device to hear anything. Try running this stuff through Rosegarden or Muse and see if everything is working as expected.
