No idea.  Maybe you didn't have the right development packages
installed.

Just run JACK at the same sample rate that your audio files use.  It's
easiest to use qjackctl.

The smaller you set JACK's buffer size, the lower the latency.  Use the
lowest setting that does not result in xruns.
