although i understand your point, i'd like to point out that there is
more "legacy" h/w with ALSA support than there is with winXP driver
support. 

what you want will not happen unless somebody in the wine project does
something. thats unlikely, since wine is a user-space only effort
(although they have fed back a few useful requests to the kernel).
device drivers (in general) live in the kernel.
