My kernel is the latest one supplied by ubuntu. And my attempts at compiling my own kernels all failed miserably : )
Also try it without X running (of course you'll have to use aconnect rather than qjackctl), you might get a kernel Oops on the screen.
I shall try using aconnect, see what messages get dumped on screen.
