Try rebooting and load the soundfont from an init script.  If your
memory is very fragmented it can fail.

I also have this problem with an older SB Live! card.
When I try to load "FluidR3-GM.sf2" it gives the not enoough memory error. But, that soundfont is 142 megabytes ...

The Live! cards have a 32 MB limit no matter how much system memory you have, so for this one you will need an Audigy card.
