Compiling went fine with the newest qmake in portage. This tool is really a great help for those who want to handle the sysex data with a GUI. I know something about the handling of threads - but not in conjunction with C (I'm quite bad in programming). I heard a lecture about threads in my last semester. Maybe I could help you with some theoretic methods. But linux-audio-dev seems to be the better place for iussues like that.
