For mastering, you could use Rezound or Audacity. Both support the
so-called LADSPA plugins, which are the standard tools for linux audio
processing right now.

Ok, I'm quite familiar with both. Actually the cutting that I did was done in audacity, so...

I would:

* Normalize (for the volume)
* Equalize (for the brightness, e.g. with the 'Multiband EQ')
* and perhaps add a tiny bit of compression to make the sound fuller.
(e.g. with the 'SCO1')

Great, I'll give that a try, hopefully over the weekend. I hope I can bore you all with the results, maybe I need some more advice as I start working on it.
