Of course there can be Free Software without copyright. Public Domain
is an example, there are others. The incentive to use the concept of
Copyright in the GPL never was to praise the merits of "Copyright" or
even "Intellectual Property". The GPL used the already existing
Copyright laws to fight Copy-Restrictions. That's why this is called
Copyleft. Please don't turn the Copyleft idea into a defense of
Copyright.
