I found the problem - Gnome starts its own sound server for system event sounds - I hadn't realised this as I only have headphones connected to my soundcard at the moment & I only wear them when I listen to music. Anyway, I stopped the Gnome sound server & Audacity is happy once again. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
