I'm not sure if I'll ever see it again or not... well I finally recreated the anomoly and yes I just tried restarting alsa instead of rebooting and it seems to have gone away...hmmm. the way I recreated it was by taxing the system a little - running like 8 instances of mplayer at once hmmmm
