"Cheesy video games" would indicate that you're currently using an
OPL3 FM synthesizer chip.

The only supported wavetable chip is Emu10k1 (i.e. Soundblaster Live
or a non-LS Audigy).

You could use a software synthesizer or some external MIDI
synthesizer, too.
