Are hda and hdb on the same IDE controller (and possibly even the same cable)? I have seen this kind of problem with IDE RAID where one drive is locking up the IDE bus or the controller is faulty.... Try with a new IDE cable, and then with only one drive connected (may require some faffing about to get what was the slave drive to boot as the master). Just some thoughts. HTH. Regards, Dan.
